An Art Book

I checked out this book from Berkeley Library, Science through Art-Water by Hilary Devonshire. It's a very interesting book with fascinating, easy-to-do activities for children. I tried out some of these activities with my son, Hong Bao, and he loved them.

Graffiti-Art or Not

I took pictures of these graffiti around the city of Berkeley. To me, these "tagging", scribble- scrabble, signatures of someone on somebody else's buildings and things are not "Art." They're nuisance; messy work of irresponsible individuals who are going around the city and tagging things to mark their turf like dogs marking their teritories with urine.

A true artist buys and paints his/her own canvas, but when you've invaded someone else's space or imposed and forced your ideas on public or privately owned buildings and such, you are not an "artist." These taggers have no respect and consideration for others. If these graffiti were works of "art," why do communities around the country spend hundred of thousand of dollars to clean them up every year? Why are our tax dollars being wasted on this rubbish instead of educational or social purposes?

In short, graffiti is definitely NOT ART.

This poster says it all.

How Berkeley Can You Be Parade

Every year around September since 1996, the city of Berkeley holds its own parade.(check out howberkeleycanyoube.com to find out more about its history.) There are all kinds of people "sane and insane" from different ethnicities, beliefs, and political backgrounds march together. They start on Sacramento street and ends at the Civic Center in downtown Berkeley. People are lining up on both sides of the street to watch and marvel at the funnyish, punkish, craziness and artful creations of all kinds : clothing or nonclothing, cars, headresses, bikes, and "you name it", Berkeley parade has it. My children and I like to come to the parade to cheer on Berkeley Library people, to laugh, have fun, and to take pictures. We are looking forward to another parade this year on September 17, 2006.

Hi Nga,

The How Berkeley Can You Be Parade reminds me of the Fremont Solstice Parade here in Seattle, and also Eeyore's Birthday Party in Austin, Texas, where we lived in the '90's. All three are events celebrating individuals and their creativity...
