DIY at the African American House, Berkeley. Dec. 3, 06
Anh-Vu, Hong-Bao and I went to the DIY (Do It Yourself) workshop at the Students' African American House in Berkeley. It was a beautiful and warm Sunday. I was invited by Ms. Madeline S., an architecture student from UCB to an afternoon paper craft workshops there. The idea was put together by her to encourage people to use recycled materials to make their own special gifts for their loved ones instead of buying them this holiday season.
Being a recycling nut myself, I thought it was a wonderful idea, so I agreed to volunteer. Most of the people there were young college students so they learned origami very fast, and their folds were neat and perfect.
Gillian L., a lady that I met from teaching origami at the Elephant Pharmacy the last three sessions was there too. She liked paper folding and said that it was a good exercise for her fingers. We had such a fun, relaxed and creative two-hour on this quiet Sunday afternoon (Saturday was a big game day-Cal vs.Standford. Cal won so you can imagine what it was like last night).
We folded a fan and a star ornament, a purse, a helmet, a square gift box, a container box, a four-pointed star box, and a crane. While we were concentrated on our folding, a another student volunteered to cook a vegetarian Mexican lunch for everybody. Gillian bought two plates for her and Bao and they joined other students for a wonderful lunch. After that Gillian drove us home, and promised to come to my origami workshop at the Berkeley Public Library next week. Thank you Gillian L. for your generosity (she said that she likes to give) and an easy-open friendship. And thank you Madeline and your fellow students for a wonderful, creative afternoon. It was a pleasure to have met new people and make new friendship. My children and I wish all of you and yours good health, and happiness. Cheers and happy folding!

Madeline S.'s flyer. Very artistic and creative, because you can fold it into a cute square package.

Before taking the pictures, I always let people know that I am going to post their pictures on my blog. They all said that they don't mind at all.

Madeline seemed very proud of her origami.

Madeline and her own project-book binding.

Gillian L. and Nga.

Gillian loved posing for the picture. She is an honest, easy going, warm-hearten, forthright, kind of person, and I like that. Life is already too complicated and crazy so why not make it easier and fun to live? Smile and the world will smile with you!

Wow! A table full of origami. Wonderful! Now that really makes my day.
