Thuan An Hearing and Speaking Impaired Center, Viet Nam

Through my sister-in-law, Ms. Hai's introduction, I visited the Thuan An Center for the mute and deaf children in Binh Duong province, southern Viet Nam. The center was established in 1880 by a French priest, Rev. Azemar. It now runs by Ho Chi Minh University. Thuan An center provides primary and vocational education for children from 5 through 20 years of age, and houses about 320 students. Since 1994 the center gets some help from Caritas Switzerland and Luxembourg, but it still needs individual like us to help provide these children with education and job training in areas like: embroidery, carpentry, tailoring, wood carving, basic computer training, hair cut, and drawing. I bought one of the children's beautiful embroidery pictures -- the two lover birds, and also took some pictures of their other work. My sister-in-law, Hai, comes to Thuan An very often with her friends to help out whenever or with whatever they could either with money, food or clothing. She is a familar face and well-loved by both the children and the sisters, who run the center there. They do need all the help that they can get to provide these children with an education and jobs that will enable them to integrate into society and lead an independent life. If you could help in any way, please contact: Thuan An Center for the Hearing Empaired B 43 Lai Thieu Township Thuan An Dist., Binh Duong Province, Viet Nam. Tel. 0650 755587. Fax. 84 650 743007. Email: thuancenter@hcm.vnn.vn

We went there in the afternoon so most of the children were taking an afternoon nap, except these. They were eager, excited, and loved posing for the pictures.

Hai and Nga.
I bought this beautiful embroidery.

It usually takes the children a few months to make one of these pictures.
