Fruits of Viet Nam

Oi-Guavas. Unlike guavas in the States which are soft, small, and dark green. These Oi are as big as my palm and crunchy.

Mit-Jack Fruits. These smell very good and they also taste so good (even the boiled seeds). Sorry, we didn't bring a knife big enough to cut these up so I can show you how the fruit looks like inside.

Left to right: Khue, Phat (Anh Vu & Bao's cousins) and the Mit tree.

Sau Rieng-Durians. To some people these fruits smell bad, but not to me. I just don't like the taste- both the flesh and also the boiled seeds.

Mang Cuc-Mangosteens. These were delicious. I spotted these on the fruit-stand along the road toward Nha Trang.

Chuoi-Bananas. Do you know that bananas grow pointing up and not down? My children thought they were supposed to point down until they saw them on the tree. These bananas were growing in our relatives' orchard.

Chom chom-Rambutan. These look spiky, but the "spikes" are soft and the inside taste sweet.

Qua Na-Custard Apples. You peel the outer skin, eat the flesh, and spit out the black seeds.

(Clock wise) qua Na, Bon bon, and Nhan, and Chom Chom.

We went to a Can Tho's orchard and spotted these Cam-these are oranges, green ouside but orange inside, and they are quite sweet and juicy. There are also tangerines that look and taste the same as these oranges, but with a thinner peel and not as rounded.

Nhan-Longans, white-soft-tranparent and sweet flesh with a round black seed in the middle.

Buoi-Pamelo, unlike pamelo in the States which is yellow outside and pink inside, and tastes very sour. This fruit is yellow inside, juicy and sweet; a very good source for quenching thirst when traveling in Viet Nam.

A Thanh Long Flower.

Thanh Long Plants.

Thanh Long Fruits.

These are Thanh Long-Dragon Fruits, very popular growing fruits in Phan Thiet. I was told that these Thanh Long taste sweet only in this region. White flesh with little black, crunchy seeds, and juicy but not sweet (perhaps because we bought them in Ho Chi Minh City.) Very pretty and colorful fruits indeed.
