How To Cut A Thom-Pineapple

Twenty years ago,when I first saw a lady in the States cut up a pineapple I said to myself: "Wow! What an ugly cut and a waste of the fruit!" This is how the Vietnamese cut a pineapple (I learned this from my mother), step by step:



A thom-pineapple.



Cut off the top and bottom.



Do not cut too deep like this to get rid of the eyes. It's too wasteful.



Cut thin, the eyes are still visible all around.



Do you see how the eyes are lining up diagonally? Do not cut them like this (My mother used to warn me not to cut the pineapple this way because it could make me high and dizzy when I eat it. But as I got older, I didn't believe that anymore. She just wanted me to pay attention to how the eyes are lined up, and it would look prettier to cut it the other way.)



Cut it like so. Do you see the difference? The eyes seem to curve and wrap around the fruit more instead of a straight line.



This is the finished product. Prettier than just plain, straight cut. Isn't it?



Now cut it in half. And then fourths and cut away the core.



After that cut them into smaller pieces and enjoy. This thom-pineapple was really sweet and juicy, and my children loved it.
