The Annual Children's Day at BPL, April 29, 2007
This year there was no International Food Festival in West Berkeley to draw the crowd away from Berkeley Public Library's Children's Day, so more than two hundred people came to this year's festivity. I joined the Children's library staff with a table to teach origami to the children and their parents. The feature folding was the samurai hat made from the recycled Sunday comic newspapers brought in by library staff (Thank you!) The children and their parents really enjoyed making and wearing it.

Free books and educational materials for the children, their parents, relatives and friends.

A group of young musicians, The Los Mopaches. They played beautiful, fun and enchanting music.

I went around to take some pictures of the activities, but I was being watched. I did not even notice until after I saw the pictures while working on photoshop.

The Samurai hat making table.

This lady and her son wanted to learn how to make a crane, and she seemed pleased with herself afterward.

Someone told this man about my previous origami classes so he came in just to introduce himself, and invited me to come to meet an origami group in San Francisco. The name of the group is (in case some of you may want to join them): Bay Area Rapid Folders. The group meets every first Saturday of the month, from 2-5pm. The meeting place is Bernal Heights Branch Library, Cortland Street in San Francisco.

Mothers and their children tried out the hat and other folds.

This boy was very good with his folding. Look at his concentration.

Gillian was always at my side to help out with the folding and taking pictures. She was also great with the children.

Giving out recycled origami magnets that I made.

More samurai hat folds.

He was very proud of his accomplistment.

...And so was Gillian- the young at heart lady.

The boy on the left could be my assistant anytime.

This little boy only interested in a paper airplane, so I showed both him and his dad how to fold a glider plane. They were thrilled that it glided so gracefully in the air.

Bao, my son (on the right) met his old school mate from last year at the event. They only liked to read comic books, chatted to each other, oblivious to the surrounding noise and people.

My cute group of girls with their samurai hats.

Volunteers, staff, the children and their parents made a long, yellow banner on the floor.

Norman Ng., the magician entertained a big crowd. This was the first time that I saw a Chinese American magician, he was really good and funny.
It was a fun Sunday afternoon for me, the library staff and patrons. Most of the pictures above were taken by me, some by Gillian, Bao and a volunteer.

Thanks, Nga!
Those were really cool pictures. I am so glad that you were able to be at Dia this year, and I know the patrons were too. :)

Thank you Elizabeth, Alan, and Erica for having me. And thanks so much for providing us with copies of the folds and origami papers.

Dear Nga,
Thank you for everything you've done to make Berkeley Public Library a better place for the public and for the staff.
I feel very lucky to have worked with you, to have seen your boys growing up-and to have been able to see your wonderful work with kids in the DIA and other programs you've done for Children's.
Thanks again and best wishes.

Hi Nga,
It was nice seeing you at the library on Sunday. I'm
happy that you recognized me! And it was good timing,
because I wanted to let you know about this Origami
show coming up in Alameda. Here's a link:

Feel free to share this with people you think would be
interested.
By the way, I paid a visit to your blog. I saw that
you mentioned the Bay Area Rapid Folders. That branch
of the SFPL is now closed for renovations. We've moved
to the Ocean View Branch Library, 345 Randolph St.,
San Francisco CA 94132 -- (415) 355-5615. We still
meet the first Saturday of the month.
Here's the web site:

Take care,
