Tet-Vietnamese New Year, 2007

This year February 18, 2007 marks the first day of Lunar New Year. It is the year of Dinh Hoi - the pig.

This beautiful Tet (New Year) card came from the General Council of Viet Nam in the United States in San Francisco.

We were also invited by the Vietnamese Consulate to the Tet celebration in San Francisco on January 27, 07. The program of the evening with the title: Huong Tet Viet or FragrantViet New Year. As the program above stated, there was a fashion show and the famous Vietnamese singer-Lam Truong was also featured, but we left early so I did not have the chance to see them.

The entrance to the party with non la (conical hats) hung from the ceiling.

The lion dance opened the show.

Mr. and Mrs. General Council, Tran Tuan Anh. According to the General, Viet Nam has been enjoying a surge of economic prosperity in recent years. I was very happy to know that, and I could tell by a large crowd that was invited to this year's Tet by the Consulate. Prosperity is good news as long as the environment and the poor are not suffering and forgotten.

We-Nga, Anh-Vu, Hong-Bao, and Gillian (a friend of mine) arrived just in time to see the lion dance.

The party started with the speeches, the count down and the balloon drop.

...And then the singing, dancing and feasting began. The party was really fun and festive. The food was colorful but not great. There were long tables full of food lining up on all three floors, but the one that we chose did not have any fish sauce, so some Vietnamese dishes like: banh cuon- rice crepes, and banh xeo tasted bland without the sauce. Spring rolls in Thai wrappings were soggy and cold. We only liked the goi ngo sen (lotus stem salad with shrimp ).

Vietnamese singers singing Tet songs.

The dancing and singing group in Vietnamese traditional dresses.

The tradition of giving out the li xi (red envelopes) to invited guests for good wishes and luck.

The former mayor of San Francisco, Mr. Willy Brown, also gave a speech.

Perhaps over a thousand people came to enjoy the evening.

A tray full of li xi envelopes.

A young man and woman wearing traditional Vietnamese clothes ( ao dai ) gave out li xi to invited guests at the party. Anh-Vu, Hong-Bao and Gillian all got a li xi with 500 Vietnamese dong for good luck. Chuc Mung Nam Moi everybody! We wish you all good health, prosperous, and happiness in the year of the pig.

Hi, I'm a student at OU and I'd like to be involved with a vietnamese association that puts on Tet celebrations in OK. Do you know of an organization like this? What kinds of adult vietnamese organizations are there here?
