A Craft Program at BPL- North Branch, Feb. 9, 2008

After a week of a rainy and cold weather (30s and 40s), this Saturday afternoon was in the sixties, sunny and gorgeous. What a day to start a craft program - about 35 women, children and a few men came to Berkeley Public Library North Branch to celebrate The Year of the Rat and Valentine. According to Chinese horoscope, a person who was born in the year of the Rat is "easy to get along with, hardworking and thrifty. Generous towards friends. Impulsive, sharp and decisive. These are the Rat years: 1900, 1912, 1924, 1936, 1949, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 and so on. There are twelve animal signs: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Boar.

This pretty flyer was made by Tara R., the librarian/manager at North branch. She found a design with a rat inside the heart which went very nicely with my Lunar New Year and Valentine program. (Thank you Tara!)

My supervisor, Vivian V. and me at North's circulation desk (picture was taken by Juan).

A snap shot with my co-workers (taken by Vivian), Juan and Richie before my program starts.

We started the program at 3:30pm, Tara (standing) welcomed our patrons (just a few at first) and talked about other up-coming programs at North.

I showed the group the greeting cards that I made to give them some ideas of what they can do with the heart fold that they will learn later on.

We also passed out lai-xi - the red lucky envelopes and some lucky candies to people who attended the class. Vivian baked some brownies with a heart design in the middle. How very nice of her (it was her day off but she came to fold and brought us a gift. Thank you very much, boss!)

And here she is, (on the right corner) busied herself with the fold. She is neat and a fast learner with her folding. You have to be very neat with every crease and fold if you want to create a beautiful product at the end.

The color red, according to Chinese custom represents luck and good fortune, so I used all red papers for the folds. We started with a red fan which was the very first fold that I learned when I was little growing up in Viet Nam.

It was nice to see children being creative and make their own toys.

Voila! The finished product that you can fan yourself with.

Next was the candy holder fold.

Mothers assisted their children with the fold.

...and fathers too.

I also displayed some books about Vietnamese, Chinese New Year and Valentine for the patrons to check them out. It was good to see that most of the books were out at the end of the day.

A Children's Room full of people doing origami gave me a great feeling and satisfaction.

I also showed people how to make a heart for Valentine's Day, and we ended the class with the making of a Chinese Animals Zodiac Dodecahedron.

Chuc Mung Nam Moi! Gung Hay Fat Choy! Happy New Year everybody! I wish you good health and happiness, and I hope to see you again soon. Happy folding!

These pictures were taken by Juan and my son, Anh-Vu. Cam On both very much.
